What’s in Your Bag?
I sorted my handbag the other day.
And wow… I didn’t realise how much I needed to.
We Carry What We Need—Until We Don’t
Over time, I’d collected all sorts of things. Some were useful, some sentimental, some completely random. But all of them had found a space in my bag—and in their own way, they’d found a space in my life.
We carry what we need… until the moment we don’t.
Whether it’s a belief, an opinion, a habit, or something physical—our emotional and mental “baggage” builds up the same way.
Unpacking with Purpose
As I emptied my bag, I noticed patterns:
- Some things still serve me: my trusty Neom de-stress balm, a fold-up shopping bag, tiny Temple Spa minis for skincare on the go, pens, contact lenses—they stay. They’re my toolkit for when I need a little support.
- Some things I thought I’d lost: a sheet of stamps, buried at the bottom. Finding them brought an odd little spark of joy.
- Some things I’ve carried for others: sweetie wrappers I’d held onto because someone didn’t have a bin. A small reminder of how often we take on things that aren’t ours to hold.
- Some things had simply outlived their purpose: Covid test instructions. Useful once. No longer.
- Some were markers for moments:
- A future appointment card—hope, plans, something to look forward to.
- A heart-shaped stone from a beach in Arran—a moment of peace I wanted to keep close.
The Space to Let Go
I didn’t realise how full I was until I stopped and looked.
And once I did, I could choose—what to keep, what to let go, and what to thank and gently release.
Now? I feel lighter.
Not just my handbag… but me.
